Prisoner

Being a vocalist, I admire and respect, greatly, the talents of Barbra Streisand. When I searched for the lone cover to record for the album, Prisoner (Love theme from the Eyes of Laura Mars) came to mind.

It had everything I was looking for: power, dynamics and a vocal that could really soar. Lyrically, though, I felt it could emphasize, a little more, the obsessive love felt between the characters in the movie. After watching it, the lines “I can’t see beyond the pain / Darkness surrounds me now” found a home in an added bridge section.

The musical passages are as varied as the characters themselves. Prisoner begins an octave lower than the original version then jumps to Streisand’s key from the second verse and beyond. The backing vocals, performed by Stacey Williams, provide a haunting landscape to the chorus and bridge. Marcus Wolf’s guitar solo is dark and moody, complimenting the song’s theme. Buy now!

I’ve never been wrong
But you’re the only one I trust to
Show me the way

I always hear your voice
And in my dreams I hear you calling
My name

What is it about you
Some kind of light shines from your face
And I can’t turn away

I’m like a prisoner
Captured by your eyes
I’ve been taken
And I’ve been hypnotized and your eyes

Say everything
You want to keep me here forever
I can’t escape

One minute’s so sincere
Then you completely turn against me
And I’m afraid

You don’t have to say you love me
‘Cause if you want me I’ll stay
‘Cause I can’t turn away

I’m like a prisoner
Captured by your eyes
I’ve been taken
And I’ve been hypnotized
I’m like a prisoner
Captured by your eyes
I’ve been taken
And I’ve been hypnotized

I can’t see beyond the pain
Darkness surrounds me now
